Still Life

An arrangement of objects is the starting point for work which endeavours to explore the objects in an interesting way, emphasising shapes, textures, patterns and the negative spaces. I enjoy sketching, painting and drawing but find collage and print a more exciting way to interpret the forms and textures of a still life. Objects and flowers seem enlivened by a less literal approach and the design can develop in an imaginative way, sometimes leading to a more abstracted work. Unlike nature the positioning and lighting of a group of objects can be controlled, drama can be added, a sense of theatre with exciting textiles or backgrounds. This can transform the everyday into a special moment, captured and framed, to be revisited with pleasure each time one passes.
