The inspiration for this piece came from a collage of thumbnail photos of Farewell, a carving in plaster. I moved these around, allowing lines and shapes to flow and an abstract form emerged. With this starting point for one aspect I began shaping the Thermalite building block, taking the forms around the faces of the block. My aim was to create a smooth intriguing form with shading and depth. Figurative shapes became part of the patterns. This block needed fairly gentle persuasion, the material is quite soft and easy to shape. Carving is so different to building in clay. Once its gone, its gone and you almost have to feel the forms within telling you when to stop. The process is absorbing. I love the transformation from building block to sculpture. This piece seems to have an affinity with primitive artworks from the past, hence Echoes.
